the local press that she cried when she heard the news out of newtown, connecticut. she said "we always think it can't happen here, and we pray fervently that it won't. but as we know from our experience this summer, it can happen anywhere." the mayor of aurora, colorado, is still helping his community try to recover from the mass shooting there this summer where 12 people were shot and killed and another 58 people were shot but survived. he said today from aurora, "our hearts go out to the people of newtown." colorado's senator michael bennet said today, "as coloradans, we know how this type of tragedy can shake a community to its core. we are here for connecticut today." colorado's governor, john hickenlooper, he said, "we know too well what impact this kind of violence has on a community." he said that the first thing he wanted to do today was talk to his counterpart governor in connecticut, dan malloy. governor hickenlooper said, "i cannot put into words how impossible it seems to me that this can happen again so suddenly." virginia tech was the site of a mass shooting five years ag

. this one inside the sandy hook elementary school in newtown, connecticut. a grim new addition to the litany of lives lost in this country to mass gun violence. this time the majority of the victims were children. the death toll at the school has just been updated by connecticut police. 27 people dead, 20 children, 6 adults, and the gunman. the second deadliest school shooting in united states history. officials add that one other adult was found dead at a secondary scene. there is some confusion over the identity of the shooter. not a surprise given the situation like this. and details about his motive and exactly what firearms were used are evolving. what we do know is that the gunman's mother, nancy, was a kindergarten teacher it he school and is among those killed. with the death toll encompassing many of her kindergarten students, children 5 and 6 years old. an emotional president addressed the tragedy just a few moments ago. >> i know there's not a parent in america who doesn't feel the same overwhelming grief that i do. the majority of those who died today were children, beautiful lit

with their children. police are on the ground missed the school searching room to room. connecticut state police have scheduled a news conference for 1:00 eastern. joining us on the phone, msnbc analyst and former fbi profiler clint van zandt. clint, give us your read, your assessment, on this situation? >> well, we know that the shooter is dead. we don't know whether that is by law enforcement action when the first responding officers went in and confronted him or whether, as we saw in the portland, oregon, mall shooting this past week, whether the shooter actually shot himself committing suicide. we know that at least two handguns were found. you know, that takes us back to april 2007 when the shooter at virginia tech, in that case, who killed 32 and wounded 15, also had two handguns. what it does suggest, though, is that this individual went in there with carrying two handguns and perhaps other ammunition. he went in there apparently to confront someone. we're told that confrontation took place in the office of the school and may have spilled out from there. we're still trying to understand the nu

sad news that their children had been killed and have been with the governor of connecticut and others who are speaking with them. i know you've been speaking with your law enforcement sources. describe what's going on at this moment as they are trying to find more information about the shooter and how he was connected to this. >> they're doing background investigations into the shooter but also going to locations associated with the shooter. not just directly associated with ryan lanza, his residence-- and they're looking far location in new jersey there-- but also his family's residences in and around connecticut. he has a father who is down in stamford. he has a mother who is a teacher at the school whose house is in newtown. they went there. ha's where they saw what appeared to be a body and they're doing an entry there to see what else they can learn inside that house. and, of course, they're spinning all the records and databases to get additional background. that will give them information but it won't give them the why. the only way they're going to get the why is to get his in

conference on the latest on the school shooting in newtown, connecticut. today, we are focused entirely on newtown. approximately an hour and a half outside of new york city, newtown, connecticut, is a small commuter town locateded in fairfield kocounty. it is a predominantly middle-class white community with approximately 30,000 people. they have several schools and synagogues and churches and it has a rotary club and basketball league like many other towns, but yesterday, as many of you know, newtown became the latest statistic of what is a disturbing pattern of mass gun violence. a gunman opened up fire against schoolchildren and staff at sandy hook elementary and killing at latest count 20 children and 6 adults. the president addressed the nation yesterday in response to the tragedy. >> as a country, we have been through this too many times, whether it is an elementary school in newtown or a shopping mall in oregon or a temple in wisconsin or a movie theater in aurora or a street coroner chicago, these neighborhoods are our neighborhoods, and these children are our children. >> the

their way to connecticut work their way up i-95 from states in which there are substantially easier gun laws, and guns in some cases sold under exceptions to the rule for gun shows. those guns work their way up i-95 and get to places like new york city or cities in our state, and i have always said and will continue to say that those exceptions and the absence of a tougher federal legislation is not good for connecticut, not good for our cities, and, again, i also have firmly believed that these high capacity magazines are extremely dangerous. having said that, being in the top five, i think there have been people -- people have previously thought they have done enough in connecticut. i'm not saying i was one of those. i doubt that there's any one of those left. colleague from connecticut, rosa delauro, has introduced that bill year after year. you said that the federal government can borrow money, 10-year notes, even 15-year notes, somewhere around 1.5%, maybe toward 2%. if we were to borrow that, put it into an infrastructure bank and then loan money to infrastructure projects that have a cash flow, sanitation facility, water facility, toll bridges and numerous other kinds of infrastructure, which is desperately needed, we could have a financing system that over time would actually make money for the federal government. could borrow at 1.5%, loan at 1.75%, have a margin there, the money would flow back in. you'd get that revolving. the president has actually proposed this in his american jobs act. he's picked this up during his debate, the fiscal cliff negotiations, put it back on the table. we ought to be doing that. in doing so we will create tens of thousands, indeed hundreds of thousands of american jobs. american jobs. and if we couple that with buy american so that the equipment, the steel, the concrete, the other ingredients

on this christmas eve directed at newtown, connecticut, site, of course, of the tragedy at sandy hook. the overwhelming response summed up by one local who said, quote, there were nine minutes of evil and an infinity of goodness after that. here's abc's linsey davis. >> reporter: a town in need of christmas cheer got it from across the country. in sparta, wisconsin, we saw these 26 snow angels, each for the innocent lives lost in newtown, each with a name and an age. from kalamazoo, michigan, 700 bracelets from a local business and from students, headed to newtown. flower seeds inside each of those smiley faces for the community to wear and plant. and for the newtown police department? officers around connecticut banding together, volunteering to work on christmas day so every newtown officer can have the day off with their family. and at their town hall, mountains of donated toys from all corners of the country, even hurricane sandy victims sending comfort and kindness from what little they have left. >> we had so much help, we wanted to pay it forward and try to help somebody else.

. in connecticut, we picked up about six inches of snow before it did change over to rain, which it's going to stay as all rain at this point, but we do still have winter storm warnings and advisories posted, now mostly across central and northern new england, where we are still looking at additional snowfall accumulations. and look at that all across northern vermont, areas that want it, especially in the ski resorts, should pick up more than two feet of snow. the purple area is where we should see a foot or more, and areas back across massachusetts only an additional inch or so, especially inland areas where it is still all snow right now. as for wind gusts, the jersey shore, bricktownship, new jersey, barnegat bay, new jersey, picked up wind gusts near hurricane force, 70 to 75-mile-per-hour wind gusts were reported through the night last night. we did also in dover, delaware, pick up a 64-mile-per-hour wind gust. so the winds along the coast have been brutal, but they are weakening right now. we do still have gusts near 50 miles per hour in boston, but all across the rest of the mid-atlantic re

across new york and long island, across the connecticut sound and really heavy downpours into boston and drive a little further north and it's all snow. that combined with strong wind is making for a very messy day today. so many people are out and about, trying to enjoy holiday time or maybe just heading back to work or to the stores to return gifts. but unfortunately we're seeing heavy downpours into bridgeport, connecticut and once you start heading to upstate new york, it's accumulation. we're talking about a foot or more for upstate new york, 3 to 6 for places like massachusetts, worcester and the berkshires. the pocono mountains will see about 6 inches of snow and into northwestern new jersey you're still looking at snow as well. this is a strong area of low pressure, it will work its way across the northeast. the cold air coming in behind it will help enhance the heaviest snow across the great lakes and extreme northern new england. we're also experiencing some bitterly cold temperatures right here in the south. this morning it's 35 in atlanta, 33 in birmingham. the cold air i

the morning off. with the nation still reeling from the shooting massacre in newtown, connecticut, and engaged in a national debate on gun control, chicago suffered a grim milestone last night, a man was killed in a shooting on chicago's dangerous west side. this scene marks chicago's 500th homicide this year alone. that's up more than 50 from last year. now when we're researching this story this morning, one statistic really jumped out at us. in the past five years, 270 children have been killed by gun violence in chicago. on top of that, there have been dozens of other people injured. cnn's ted rowlands rode along with two chicago police officers earlier this year to get a firsthand look what it's like on the streets of chicago. here is his report. >> there's a couple places i want to check out. >> reporter: it's a friday night on the streets of chicago in theening. wood neighborhood. joe patterson and leo schmidt have been cops here for 26 years. >> we go around the blocks, what you do is you scan everything and when they see they're a policeman if they're doing something wrong or got a gun

're leaving in new jersey, out your door or new york city area, southern connecticut, some showers are about to move through. they're already coming in pretty good now, moving on interstate 78 and 80 across new jersey and into the greater new york city area. they'll be in and out quickly by 8:00 a.m. they should be overwith. it's little area of showers. you can see it right here. southern hudson valley to just north of philadelphia. that's about it. those will quickly blow through long island and also through connecticut as we go throughout the early morning. after that, the warm front goes through and will warm up in a hurry. a pool of cold air moved in overnight over new england. hartford at 32. it's 17 degrees warmer right now in new york. but that cold air that just temporarily settled in overnight will be pushed out in a hurry during the day to day. all the warm air to the south will win out. temperatures are going to rise rapidly. should head up to 58 today in hartford after starting out in 32. that is pretty incredible, almost a 30 degree temperature rise during the daylight hours. 73
